Underground in London. Photo: Katja CondyMY LATEST project is the formation of a trio with double bassist Ben Markland and drummer Eric Ford. This is something of a reunion as I used to play with both of these musicians during our university days. Ben is an experienced session player, performing with The Temptations and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, to name but two. In 2005 I invited him to perform with me in duo at the National Portrait Gallery’s Music Series. Click on listen in to hear a part of this concert. His versatility and knowledge will be indispensable for the trio project.

After years of playing on the P&O liners and collecting drum rhythms at source from around the world, Eric moved to Paris. He performs regularly with Chilean bassist Marcelo Cordova and his return to the UK was anticipated in July 2006 by a gig with Japanese pianist and composer Makoto Kuriya at the City of London Festival. Eric plays with a combination of intensity and musicality matched by few drummers.

Plans are in place to record an album soon. All the material will be arrangements, with the idea of putting well-known pieces into unusual settings. We will be showcasing the project in public for the first time at St Edmund’s Church Centre in East London on November 18th 2006. See gigs for details.
